What are the options if treatment isn't available on the NHS or the wait is too long? Medical Tourism is a term that basically means combining a holiday with a surgical procedure. Sounds ideal, doesn't it? If you need pain-relieving surgery or cosmetic maintenance work why not combine it with a holiday in a nice location? Thousands of British people have been spending millions jetting off abroad for a quick nip-and-tuck, nose job, hip or knee replacement or dental work - among other procedures. Many choose to follow up the treatment with rehabilitation at a spa. Other treatments commonly sought abroad include heart surgery, hernia repairs, orthopaedic procedures, cataract removal, hair transplants, infertility treatments and chemotherapy The reason for the success of this new industry is no mystery. Waiting times for operations under the National Health Service, or the unavailability of some treatments under the NHS, leave no choice for many but to suffer or pay up. Ongoing private health insurance in the U.K. is simply not affordable for the average person. Those seeking surgery abroad have a very wide choice of countries to choose from, and they are increasing all the time. They range from Latvia to India and even South Africa (combine surgery with a safari!). India, in particular, has risen to meet the demand for quality care and is popular among the British. For low-cost dental treatment many choose Croatia, Hungary, Latvia, Spain or Thailand This new booming industry has spawned the growth of medical tourism companies which specialize in putting together complete packages for patients. They take care of all the details - which may otherwise be too daunting for most people to tackle alone. The packages vary but will usually include flights, transfers, hotels, meals, surgical procedures and post-operative care at the closest resort area, if required. Older people are the ones most likely to search abroad for treatment for serious or life-threatening conditions. Another sector of society travelling abroad for treatments are the baby-boomers and young professionals with spare cash to burn. Going abroad for procedures like liposuction, breast augmentation, face lifts and Botox treatments offers a degree of privacy. If they return to work looking younger and rejuvenated after their 'holiday' no one need know the real reason! It all sounds very tempting, so what's the catch? There are downsides to all this, of course. Many fear travelling so far from home and away from the support of family and friends. Some fear they will be exposed to tropical diseases like Malaria or even a nasty case of Delhi belly. What if something should go wrong or there are post-operative complications? It would be daunting, expensive and probably impossible to fight for compensation in a foreign court. Then there's the problem of obtaining travel insurance… For many people though, the risks are far outweighed by the desperate need for an alternative to years of living in pain while they wait for NHS treatment. It's a good idea to shop around first and find out whether having the procedure done at a private clinic in the U.K. is feasible rather than risk travelling so far from home. However, in most cases the costs abroad are significantly lower - due, in part, to the cheaper labour and the lower cost of malpractice insurance. Before taking the plunge, be aware that travel insurance policies do not normally cover claims for those who travel abroad for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment. Most policies will contain a general exclusion to this effect, and the entire policy could be invalidated - meaning that even claims for lost luggage would be denied! The same applies to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). As far as insurers are concerned, those seeking medical treatment abroad pose a significant risk as they are obviously already ill, or have a medical problem. If a patient is determined to pursue treatment abroad, we would advise that anyone travelling with that person should obtain their own separate travel insurance policy. Although travel insurers should always ask about pre-existing conditions, they may not specifically ask whether treatment is being sought abroad. It could, therefore, be incorrectly presumed by the customer that they would be covered even though they have not volunteered the real reason for the trip. Travellers should also be wary of travel insurance policies offered from abroad as they may not provide adequate cover, and there would be no access to consumer protection in the event of a problem! Anyone considering medical or dental treatment abroad should do plenty of research first. There is a wealth of information to be found online, as well as forums where patients can share their experiences and leave comments and reviews. At the time of writing, travel insurers have not jumped to fill the gap in this potentially lucrative market, but maybe that will change in the future. It might be worth leaving a note for the tooth fairy and see what happens.

Don't Be a Communication Killer
Beware! Some conversation responses—like reassurance, advice, and identification—that seem helpful on the surface can actually hinder positive communication, and may even end a conversation before it has a chance to become meaningful communication.

Don't be a communication killer—be an active listener

Here are the three don'ts: don't deny, don't resolve, and don't me-too.

- Don't deny: "You don't need to lose weight, you look fine."
When a friend shares an experience, a fear, or a feeling ("I'm so fat ...") and you respond with reassurance, you may mean to comfort her, but what you're really doing is cutting off her sharing with the statement that she shouldn't feel that way—you're denying her feelings.

- Don't resolve: "If I were you ..."
When someone tells you about a problem they've having, and you quickly hand them a solution, you shut them right down. Think about it. If you wanted to chat with a friend about a problem and maybe share some ideas and they quickly throw a solution at you, it wouldn't feel very good. Their two-minute solution to a problem you've been struggling with for weeks would probably (a) be unlikely to work, (b) be something you already though of, and (c) be very likely to end the conversation.

- Don't me-too: "I know exactly what you mean—the same thing happened to me ..."
When a friend begins to share something they're going through and you cut them off with a "Me, too" and go into your "story", you've killed the conversation. Your friend may never get to finish telling you about his experience, but he'll know all about what happened to you.

None of these responses gives a conversation a chance. Often the best "conversations" are very one-sided as far as speaking is concerned. This is called active listening and it's a vital ingredient in meaningful communication. The "listener" listens very intently and hardly says a word, only contributing enough to let the other person know they're really hearing them. Think about the difference active listening would have made in the three don'ts examples above.

Don't kill a conversation with reassurance, advice, or identification. Your goal is not to diagnose, pacify, or fix. Let your goal be to listen, and to let the speaker know he's been heard.
Got a Minute?
"Got a minute?"

Have you ever had someone ask you this? Doesn't it immediately send up a yellow flag in your mind: Why is he asking me this? Does he want me to have a cup of coffee with him? Does he want advice, or a favor? It's an invisible question—you don't know what he wants, you do know it probably won't take just a minute, and you don't know how to respond. Your honest answer is probably, "For what?" But you don't feel comfortable being so blunt—and you feel cornered.

If you get this a lot, handle it by reminding the person to be visible with "Why are you asking?" or "Tell me more." This way, rather than uncomfortably saying, "Yes" without having any idea of what's coming, you're being direct in your communication and the final result will be better for both of you.

Another example of invisible communication is "What are you doing Friday night?" You wonder, Is she just curious? Does she want to invite me somewhere? Or maybe she wants me to babysit? What if she simply said, "I have an extra ticket for the concert on Friday night—would you like to come with me?" How easy is that to answer?

We all speak invisibly at times. When you catch yourself doing it, remind yourself to finish the sentence: "Do you have a minute to discuss ... ?" "What are you doing Friday night? I have concert tickets and I'm hoping you can join me." When your intent is clear, people don't feel as if they're being manipulated or trapped—and they feel comfortable responding to you.

Visible communication strengthens relationships

Visible communication makes your purpose clear—invisible communication, as in the examples above, masks your purpose. When your intent is clear, people don't feel as if they're being tricked or manipulated. They feel safe and respected. And they feel comfortable responding to you. They'll give your direct communication a direct answer. Communication is flowing and easy. Visible communication helps build stronger relationships. Make your intent visible, make your purpose clear, and strengthen your relationships.

Google Your Next Home: Using Google Earth to Find Real Estate

Google Earth is one of those cool little tools that, for many, has no use except for "visiting" places they used to live or have visited before. However this free tool can be immensely helpful when looking for your next home.

Many people have enjoyed looking for their houses and potential houses on Google Maps. Google Earth offers another feature: terrain. For people who don't want to walk or bike up and down hills to access shops or local amenities, this can be important. For seniors, who may have difficulty negotiating hilly terrain, this can be a necessity.

With a click of a button, Google Earth can allow you a limited 3-D view of the house you are considering. You can then view the relative terrain in the area surrounding the house and of any major thoroughfares. Google Earth can also map the driving distance between your potential residence and favorite destinations.

Another advantage of Google Earth is that it is privy to the same information as Google Maps. If you are looking for certain amenities near the property you are considering, Google Earth will list the ones that it knows of and can be used to search for more.

Currently, the main issue with searching real estate with Google Earth is the limited nature of the listings. It is not designed as a global real estate search engine; every company/individual who wants their listings seen on Google Earth has to create a file with them on it. It is often best to search Google for real estate in the location you desire and then check to see if the company/individual is working with Google Earth.

These files have a .kml extension. KML means "Keyhole Markup Language" after the company Keyhole, Inc. Sometimes you will find .kmz file extensions which are merely .kml extensions that are zipped, due to the heavy information load that a .kml file can carry. You will need an extractor program to release these files.

In order to access these files, you have to download and install the Google Earth. Then, download and open a .kml file. When you're downloading, a little window should pop up asking if you want to open it with Google Earth. Say yes. If it doesn't ask you if it can open it with Google Earth, head over to that little box and tell it to use Google Earth.

Once your file is open in the program, check it out. You may have to zoom in to see all the listings (usually in the shape of houses), but once you get the hang of it, Google Earth is really easy to use. Play around with it. See what you can do with the toolbar. If you are interested in a property that you can't find in a Google Earth file, you can enter in the address and enjoy a cool flying sensation as the globe turns and you whoosh in to hover over your destination.

One thing that I have found with Google Earth is that it is not always the best way to determine property size and the state of the building. Sites that appeared to have a decent sized lot from above turned out to be little postage-stamp places with barely enough room to squeeze through the gate! Google Earth is only the beginning; once you find a home to buy, definitely do the legwork of going to see it or getting someone to take photos that show you the entire property.

Sex And The City - Loved The Show - Can't Wait For The Movie!

I love all the girls, but my favorite is Carrie. Sarah Jessica Parker has always charmed me, but as Carrie in SEX AND THE CITY she continued, week after week, to take me along on her emotional roller coaster rides. Big (Chris Noth) broke my heart as well as hers. I felt her pain as she pushed and pulled Aiden (John Corbett) in their relationship. Jack Berger (Ron Livingston) hurt me in the way he treated Carrie. Post-It notes will never have any other meaning! Last, there's Aleksandr (Mikhail Baryshinokov) who will never be forgiven.

Carrie's friends became my friends. Kim Cattrall plays Samantha, the wonderfully confident (most of the time) woman who takes the world by its balls. To name all her men would take a lifetime, but the touchingly good, Smith (Jason Lewis), and the dreadfully bad, Richard (James Remar), are both in one of the best tear-jerking scenes in the series.

Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is the guilt-ridden lawyer who is, most of the time, the most levelheaded friend. The most unlikely relationship develops with Steve (David Eigenberg), a bartender and, eventually, the father of her baby. It doesn't' work out, and then there's Dr. Robert Leeds (Blair Underwood). She did break up with him for a very good reason, but I hated to see him go!

Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is the naïve, forever-optimistic friend. When she gets depressed, it's justified because she seems to have the worst luck. Once she lands Trey MacDougal (Kyle MacLauchlan) her real troubles begin, the main one the haughty, controlling mother-in-law. Never has anyone wanted a child more, or had more difficulty.

The last season of SEX AND THE CITY was so emotional that I cried at least once during every episode. It was still a comedy, but dealt with so many important issues. The girls really came through some tough situations, mainly because they had each other. When I watched it again on the Fox reruns I was so disappointed that they left out so many great moments. Can't wait for the movie!

Scrubs TV Show Comedy Or Not ?

I first started watching this show by catching reruns on FOX before i went to bed every nite. After about a couple of weeks of watching Scrubs, i loved it and went out and bought all the seasons available on DVD. Not a disappointment at all. If you are tired of those soo serious dramas out there and want some humor in your life, this is a perfect show. This show also has its dramatic moments but mixes it with some comedy too.

So why it is an comedy and why it isn`t ?

Scrubs is a TV comedy about a group of hospital employee’s that is shown on NBC Thursday nights at 9 eastern time. It’s quite different than most shows about hospitals, in that it shows you the perspective of how each person sees the events of the day, as if you are looking through their eyes. Scrubs shows the closeness and relationships of the employee’s. It demonstrates how childish even doctors and nurses can be in their thoughts if you could only read their minds. After all doctors and nurses are people too. It shows how they play pranks on each other as a means to get through life’s every day problems. The main Characters in Scrubs are JD, Elliot, Carla, Turk, Dr Kelso, Dr Cocks, Larry, Lavern, Todd and the janitor. Sometimes they get a little corny but overall it’s very funny.

Sometimes a little sappy, and always insane, this show stands out amidst a wasteland of crappy medical melodramas (I'm talking to you, ER and Grey's Anatomy!). The scary truth is that Scrubs is probably the best at capturing what we go through in med school, residency training and afterwards--but even if you're not a doc, the smart writing and psychotic subplots are enough to make this show a must-see.
